MINAMI MIYAJIMA is an artist whose practice centers on the idea of objective observation, developing structural imagery based on squares (cubes) as a fundamental element.

Born in 1997 in Konohana-ku, Osaka, she founded the artist-run space “JITSUZAISEI” in 2021. Based in the Kansai region, she participates in solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and art fairs both in Japan and internationally.

In her early works, she developed a style in which two-dimensional motifs of cubes were repeatedly arranged across the entire surface of the canvas. In her recent works, these images are treated as planes, evolving into landscape-like structures that evoke cities and spatial environments. Her works originate from visual experiences of black-and-white noise and empty spaces that she encountered while escaping reality during childhood. Through minimal color and line, her work presents images where personal memory and archetypal urban landscapes intersect.

As a child, whenever I faced something painful or unpleasant, I would close my eyes, press my arms against myself, and curl up, waiting for the imagery to appear behind my eyelids as a means of escaping reality. At first, the scene would be filled with fine black-and-white noise, which would gradually transform into a vast and empty space. Tiny pixels scattered like a sandstorm, and as my perspective pulled away, a landscape made of lines would emerge. That was the image I saw.

The world formed in black and white was not only a “cityscape” but also a reflection of my own extreme thinking—a stark contrast of 0 and 100. The representation of intermediate colors through the fineness of pixels made this world feel like being lost in a sandstorm, evoking a sense of emptiness.

I recall this inner landscape as I create digital sketches, which I then transfer onto canvas. This process allows me to distance myself from personal emotions, sentimentality, and unnecessary feelings. Looking back on the background that led me to this artistic approach, I realize how profoundly my upbringing and environment have influenced my work.

Reconstructing urban spaces with minimal colors and lines is an act of extracting the “common denominator” of a city—both the one someone grew up in and the one they currently inhabit—as an essential element of painting. In doing so, I feel a connection to the fundamental landscapes within others’ memories.
